(WASHINGTON, DC) -The Healthy DC & Me Leadership Coalition of Advocates will meet with At-Large Councilmember Robert White and his staff, along with the newly reformed Woodberry Village Tenant Association President Ms. Cornelia Hill, her fellow members, & co-residents, to discuss their ongoing housing and tenant rights violations.
Far too many families residing in Woodberry Village apartments in S.E., Ward 8 Washington, D.C. have been enduring and continue to endure under the management and ownership of the Capital Realty Group, violations of their D.C. tenant rights. There has been at least a total of 13 District & Federal systems who have been made aware of the existence of the Capital Realty Group’s violations and horrendous treatment of this community of predominantly Black families whose tenant and human rights were violated by the Capital Realty Group without the appropriate enforcement of the law from the Office of the Attorney General, Mr. Karl Racine, who has refused to sight the Capital Realty Group for slumlord and criminal violations.
Today on one of the District’s coldest days, members of the Coalition are demanding that At-Large Councilmember Robert White acknowledged the need for immediate and transparent leadership regarding the on-going housing violation matters at Woodberry Village in S.E. Ward 8, Washington, D.C.
The Coalition leaders along with the newly reformed Woodberry Village tenant association are demanding that the D.C. Council offer the tenants of Woodberry Village apartments the following:
- The Capital Realty Group be fined & assessed under the D.C. Tenants’ Rights Act.
- Retroactively Reimburse the tenants for the failure of District systems to act on their behalf.
- Prosecute Capital Realty for violating The Act.
- Publicly declare support for the families and tenants of Woodberry Village apartments.
- Hold hearings to publicly acknowledge & allow the Woodberry families stories to be heard.
The violation of any human being’s rights is a travesty. The Healthy D.C. & Me Leadership Coalition is deeply concerned about a city, (District of Columbia), and a federal government that would not immediately act to enforce the law when American citizen’s human rights are knowingly being violated.
Stand with our leadership Coalition and the families of Woodberry Village today as we call for transparent accountability and continue to seek justice on behalf of the Woodberry Village families from the following failed District & Federal systems:
- Trayon White, Ward 8 Councilmember
- Mayor Muriel Bowser
- Office of the Attorney General, Karl Racine
- Office of the Tenant Advocate
- D.C. Council
- H.U.D.
- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office
- Fire Marshall
- D.C.R.A.
- Committee on Housing & Executive Administration
- Office of the Inspector General
- City Auditor
- Bread for the City
Enough is enough! It has been almost 1-year since the Healthy DC & Me Leadership Coalition began our advocacy for the violation of rights for the families of Woodberry Village, their diminished mental states and living circumstances. Mental health matters and it always will. D.C. families with ongoing housing issues are also being subjected to ongoing mental health challenges and exposures unhealthily.
“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to progress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.” Frederick Douglass
The need for comprehensive & culturally appropriate systems of care and oversight in the District is immediate!
