(WASHINGTON, DC) – Ward 8 Southeast, DC – Marbury Plaza Tenants United for Change Tenant Association is meeting with DC Council Housing Committee Chairman At-Large Councilman Robert White today, along with Healthy DC & Me Leadership Coalition housing & mental health advocates to present “amendments” to the DC Tenant Bill of Rights Amendment Act of 2014 as a part of their ongoing efforts to proactively help to reform DC’s current housing policies, and to restore accountable, tenant supported oversight for the many District tenants who are continuously exposed to unhealthy, and uninhabitable living environments fostered by slumlord practices, failed Tenant Bill of Right protections, and legislative officials who have not demonstrated the necessary political will to rescue District tenants from living with vermin, mold, leaking pipes, safety concerns, faulty elevators, asbestos, lack of hot water, and in Marbury Plaza’s circumstance, also a landlord/property owner that has been in “contempt of court” regarding the property’s disrepair for over 2 years. “District tenants, to include seniors are living with egregious housing conditions and are also experiencing diminished mental and physical health concerns amidst lawmakers who continue to scramble to find adequate solutions, or competent responses”. The following questions presented on Monday November 6, 2023, in the “Tenant Rally” at the Wilson Building “Press Release”, remain unanswered:
- Why does the DC Tenant Bill of Rights seem to only be an effective tool when used by the OAG’s office to tout “headline” grabbing accounts?
- Why is it okay for the mayor to have ignored these tenants’ many, consistent “cries” for help?
- Why should tenants continue to accept sub-par responses to matters as serious as those, that even the DC Court system has recognized as being egregious?
- How can low-income and subsidized citizens of the District overcome health, economic, and educational disparities in the face of “gentrified” agendas that leave them “begging” for basic and humane systems that won’t keep their well-being at risk?
- Where is the proper justice for so many failed policies, oversights, and programs?
Join the Marbury Plaza tenants as they continue the fight for their dignity, to be heard, and the right to be made whole! Marbury Tenants need your voices! Please email DC legislators and officials today, with the subject: JUSTICE FOR MARBURY PLAZA & for ALL DC TENANTS, along with your message of support for District tenants’ plight to have clean, safe, and habitable housing. It’s time to unite in the fight to save DC citizens! For more information: www.healthydcandme.org #thewoodberryproject!
